Astoria Riverbots - FRC #6845

Developing next-generation STEM leadership in Astoria, Oregon

The River bots were started in 2018 at Astoria High School. The River bots are one of two local FRC teams in the area. As a third-year team, the River bots already had numerous accomplishments, such as making it to district championships two years in a row as well as earning 2nd place awards in both week two and week three events in the 2019 season.  Despite a gap due to COVID, the team has again participated since the 2023 season in district events. The River bots work to inspire students to expand their STEM knowledge and capabilities as well as to work creatively. The River bots engage members in teamwork and career-based activities to help towards a more innovative future generation of creators and leaders.

Intro to FRC

The Riverbots are a team under the First Robotics Competition, the premier STEM competition for high schools worldwide.  In their words, "Starting with a Kit of Parts, teams of high school students design, program, and build industrial-sized robots to play an action-packed game, released in January. They compete on a themed field as part of a three-team alliance in the spirit of Coopertition®."

Building a Bot

Every year, the FRC game has elements that a custom-built robot has to achieve.  This may be picking stuff up and dropping it off, shooting things, climbing, or numerous other elements.  The team is tasked with applying engineering principles and hard work to play the game with dozens of other schools.

STEM "Coopertition"

While this is a highly-competitive sport, teams cooperate with each other to help out and make sure everyone succeeds.  Students get a great survey of all things STEM from mechanical design to writing code to hazmat and safety to community outreach.  It truly covers everything STEM and then some.

Community

Each year, a combination of summer, middle school, and community outreach programs help enrich the North Coast and motivate students across Clatsop County.
